Mum had said to sit close to the bus driver, so I sat as far away as possible.

And now an Ojibway man in a red bandana and stubble cheek was snoring on my shoulder.

He smelled like communion wine, the kind my father served in plastic cups which we slid empty into the pew’s tiny cup holders.

He smelled like beer, like the late August summers when I was entering puberty, cleaning up the Corn Fest fairgrounds in my Sunday dress with my family. The beer cans all clanging like empty songs against each…

Google Will Soon Bring Android Apps To Chrome OS

Originally posted on TechCrunch:

This wasn’t a huge surprise because we’ve heard quite a few rumors about this in the past, but Google today announced that Android apps are coming to Chrome OS. They will essentially run in an Android emulator on the Chrome OS desktop and will be available in the launcher.

In Sundar Pichai’s demo, this looked better for tablet apps than for phone apps, but it’s clear that Google is working to bring Chrome and Android closer together. It’s unclear when exactly Google will make this available to users, however. Pichai did not announce any launch date — or even time range — today.

In addition to this, Google is also bringing a number of continuity features to Chrome OS. Chromebooks can now automatically unlock themselves when your phone is around, for example, and incoming phone calls and text messages will now trigger notifications on Chrome OS. However, unlike the similar features Apple showed earlier…

Chromecast, Google’s popular $35 dongle that plugs into your TV’s HDMI port, letting you stream video and music to your television, received a number of updates today, Google announced this morning at its I/O developer conference. The most notable updates include support for mirroring your Android device’s screen to your TV, a new, interactive background display feature called “Backdrop” and support for streaming from device to TV even when you’re not on the same wireless network.

Google says it has been “blown away” by Chromecast’s performance, which is now outselling every other streaming device, the company claims. That’s likely due to its low price point, which makes experimenting with Chromecast more of “oh, why not?” kind of purchase, rather than a thoughtfully considered investment, like rival Apple TV.

“YouTube sees more active engagement on Chromecast than on any other type of device,” noted Chromecast Director of Product Management Rishi Chandra, before announcing…

Google Launches Cloud Dataflow, A Managed Data Processing Service

Originally posted on TechCrunch:

Google expanded its Cloud Platform today with a new managed service called Cloud Dataflow that allows developer to create data pipelines to help them ingest, transform and — most importantly — analyze data.Developers can use the service to work with streaming real-time data and by uploading batches of data to the system.

For now, the service is in private beta and it’s unclear how Google will price Dataflow once it is launched to the public. At its core, Cloud Dataflow is Google’s successor to MapReduce, which has been an experimental App Engine feature for quite a while now.

The company says Dataflow is based on a number of technologies the company has been using internally, including Flume and MillWheel. Google is using Java for the first Cloud Dataflow SDK, but it is also providing a dashboard for monitoring these pipelines right from the developer console.

Google’s Redesigned Drive Focuses On Speed, Office Compatibility And Security

Originally posted on TechCrunch:

Google today gave its Drive online storage service a major redesign today and with it, it is also bringing a number of new features to its Docs, Sheets and Slides productivity apps on mobile and the desktop.

Maybe most importantly, Google has now built Quickoffice‘s technology, which the company acquired almost exactly two years ago, right into its productivity apps. This means you can now open and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files in their native format thanks to the new Office Compatibility Mode. Just like Google’s Sundar Pichai promised more than a year ago, Quickoffice in the browser will use Google’s Native Client technology to render documents quickly in Chrome. Because of this, however, this feature won’t work in any other browser for the time being. While Google is also building Quickoffice into the Drive Android apps, iOS users will still have to wait a little bit longer.
